Research
The first step is to get very familiar with the upcoming work by reading scripts multiple times and marking them. Delving into finding historical influences. And then drawing out key themes and inspirations from source materials. After that I ill start coming up with plans to present ideas and images that appear on my head to present to the production team.
Collaboration
After coming up with my original designs it is important to check in with production heads, collaborators, and even actors so that we can synthetize great ideas that will work together. This is done by attending pre-production meetings and by observing rehearsals once they begin so that we can see how to production is evolving and making sure that planned ideas are still working with the rest of the teams vision.
Creation
Perhaps the most fun, intense, and rewarding part; after all that planning is actually implementing the ideas. We of course start with patching and hanging lights, making sure that everything works as it should. Moving onto preprogramming to make sure that the tech rehearsals run as smooth as possible, and then building the scenes as we go on. This is where we can see our visons come to life, how they work with other creations of the design team. Finally we hit opening night and let the story come to life, hopefully helping create a bridge between the audience and the actors or presenters.
